Clos de la Roche MCMLV Grand Cru comes from a plot on the Monts Luisants, planted by Henri Lignier's grandfather in 1955.
The vines were selected from the best vines on the estate, prepared and grafted by Henri Lignier, and planted at 11,000 vines/hectare.
The 25-acre plot produces mainly very small millerandage grapes. The thick skins of the berries give the juice concentration and depth. Production is very limited, between 400 and 600 bottles a year.
**Soil and winemaking
The very stony surface hides a pearly, rocky, fissured slab that allows the roots and rootlets of the vines to seep through. The upper part of the vineyard is surrounded by a thick limestone wall, with some fallow land and shrubs, providing the area with an interesting biodiversity. Biodynamic viticulture completes the natural, authentic expression of the mineral climate.
The wine is vinified in the traditional way, with 30% whole bunches in stainless steel vats for 20 days, using only indigenous yeasts. It is then racked and aged on its lees for 21 months. Racked and bottled by gravity, without filtering or fining, it is presented in a "traditional" bottle with a label designed by an artist, Joyce Delimata, and hand-waxed to give it authenticity and allow it to age better.
The texture of this Clos de la Roche is remarkable, combining the freshness of the climate, the intensity and purity of the ripe fruit, velvety tannins and a remarkable length with a saline touch, reminiscent of its limestone terroir.
